Space Close Reading

By: Sally Landers

Practice close reading skills while learning about Space. This free packet encourages students to read with a pencil and take notes as they read. Students will read and re-read the passage several times for understanding.

Then they can complete the sentences by cutting and pasting, or coloring the evidence. There are also astronaut coloring pages and several guided writing sheets to choose from.

Reading Lessons

There are only two resources I like to make sure I include on each week’s lesson plan, Prodigies Music (below) and Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This book has thousands of 5 star reviews on Amazon for a reason. It’s an effective, no-prep way to teach reading. We are 70 or so lessons in the results have been amazing, my daughter can pretty much read anything. Still working on trying not to skip words and sounding out instead of guessing, but it’s been very effective.

The lessons are short (15-20min), easy to grasp and sequential. The entire lesson is scripted and color coded so it’s fool proof, just read the words in pink. It also is designed for kids that don’t know their alphabet or letter sounds yet, so you can start right away. My two year old was able to complete lesson 1 (excluding the sound writing) after repeating it about 10 times. We are now on lesson two. Their claim is that after completing all 100 lessons your child will be able to read at a 2nd grade level!

Math - Measurement

Measurement Blast Off

By: Angela Salyer

1, 2, 3…Blast Off! Measure how high each rocket goes by using mini space erasers, cubes or even β€œspace” rocks.

This is a great way to practice non-standard units of measurement. We also used a ruler to learn how to measure centimeters, we just rounded up to simplify things.

By: Keeping My Kinders Busy

This mini book is a great introduction to measurement and data. It defines the concepts of width, length, height, weight, capacity and categories.

On each page your students will practice reading, handwriting and will color in the pictures.

Prodigies Music

Do…Re…Mi…

We love Prodigies! Prodigies Music is simply an incredible curriculum for teaching music. Ages 2-5 is the critical time to develop a life-long sense of pitch. Their curriculum is designed to develop a sense of pitch with easy to use desk bells that don’t require any tuning. They also teach piano, recorder and ukulele. Their subscription includes everything you can think of 450+ videos, worksheets, free bell mats, sheet music all color coded so it’s super easy to learn. If you don’t have an instrument they have a bunch of rhythm focused content that doesn’t require an instrument. They even have a free bell app that I use with my toddler when my oldest is practicing.

They have a free trial and discounts for annual memberships! Great deal! You can even check out some of their videos for free on YouTube.

Orbit Model

By: More Time 2 Teach

Introduce the concept of an orbit, with this easy to make model of the Earth and Moon’s orbits. Just print on cardstock, cut out and assemble with a brad.

Once assembled you can move the moon around the Earth in its orbit as the Earth moves around the sun.

Supplies: cardstock, glue stick, brads

Oreo Phases of the Moon

Hands down this was my daughter’s favorite Space week activity. This is an incredibly fun way to learn about the phases of the moon.

First, we went to Sci Show Kids to answer the question Why Does The Moon Change? and learn about the different moon phases. Then we separated our Oreos and used a scraping tool to make our cookies match the correct moon phase.

For older students they have a blank version where they can fill in the moon shape and label each phase. We used the chart with each phase pre-labeled for Kindergarten/Pre-K and it was perfect.

Supplies: Oreos, popsicle sticks, plates.

Tour the International Space Station

Learn about life in Space by taking a virtual tour of the International Space Station. My girls were amazed to see what zero gravity looked like and to see how astronauts do simple things like eat, drink, brush their teeth, and sleep in space. Here are a couple of great videos:

- How They Eat, Drink and Survive in Space

- Take a Tour of the Space Station - SciShow Kids

Marshmallow Constellations

This constellation snacktivity is a great way to learn about the stars. Use mini marshmallows as stars and connect them with pretzel sticks to make your favorite constellation.

We used this fun Constellations Mini Book by 123 Homeschool 4 Me as a guide to help us make our marshmallow constellations.

Supplies: mini marshmallows, pretzel sticks, plates.

Social Studies

Neil Armstrong

Learn about the first man on the moon and his impact on society. We used two great resources for this lesson, I am Neil Armstrong part of the Ordinary People Change the World Series by Brad Meltzer and this awesome free Biography Report Outline by Lindsey Goff Viducich.

Sensory Play

IMG_4699.jpg

Glow-In-The-Dark Sensory Play

Loved putting together this low-prep sensory bin! I used black beans for my filler and added glow-in-the-dark planets and space shapes. Then I added some astronaut figurines. I printed and laminated these cute Space Cards by The Joy We Teach to include in the bin. For a final touch, I taped a piece of clear fishing line to the top of one side so they could string the planets across the top.

At bedtime, we turned the lights on really bright and then turned off all the lights to play. They were in awe by the glowing effect and had a blast playing in the dark!

Filler: black beans

Supplies: 3-D planets, Wild Republic Outer Space Figurines, Glow-in-the-Dark Wall Decor, wooden scoops.
