English Language Arts - Rhyming Words
Write The Rhyme
I loved these free no-prep rhyming word pages from This Reading Mama! They focus on CVCe words which can be tricky for new readers, so itโs a great way to reinforce them.
My daughter had trouble sounding out the words since many of them have long vowel sounds, so we read each word together first. Then she was able to easily figure out the matching rhyme.
Rhyming Game
By: The Measured Mom
We love the Measured Mom for great educational games. She has games for everything including several options for rhyming words.
We played the Roll A Rhyme Game this week. You roll the dice to determine your word such as โkingโ. Then you move your player token to each space saying the word as you move. You stop once you reach a word that rhymes such as โringโ.
This is great for kids who already know how to rhyme. For kids who are new to rhyming try her other game the Simple Rhyming Game, both are free.
For our printable game set-up, we use a magnetic lapboard, bar magnets and push pin magnets as our player tokens.
Handwriting Path of Movement
We have worked on handwriting since the beginning of the school year, but only in the past month have I seen a dramatic improvement.
My daughter struggles with her handwriting. She doesnโt pay attention to which way her bโs and dโs are even if she knows the difference and holding the pencil correctly is challenging for her.
Each day, we do a few pages from this handwriting curriculum I developed. But it wasnโt until we started to complete a progress tracker daily that I saw a real improvement. The key isโฆwe grade it together. We give each letter 0, 1 or 2 points for a total of 52 points (1 point for each uppercase letter, 1 point for each lowercase letter.) This way, she knows what characteristics make a nice letter versus a sloppy one. This may not be a good approach for all kids, so maybe try the Race to Z game instead. This set includes path of motion instruction pages for each letter, practice pages for uppercase only, lowercase only and both together.
Learning the correct path of movement for each letter and developing fluency of handwriting is one of our main focuses for Kindergarten for a variety of reasons. Itโs the primary predictor of later reading success. handwriting fluency allows the child to focus on composition, facilitates later learning, reinforces letter recognition and sounds, writing improves memory and spelling.
This is my most popular resource on Teachers Pay Teachers and I have a great free version too!
Reading Lessons
There are only two resources I like to make sure I include on each weekโs lesson plan, Prodigies Music (below) and Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This book has thousands of 5 star reviews on Amazon for a reason. Itโs an effective, no-prep way to teach reading.
The lessons are short (15-20min), easy to grasp and sequential. The entire lesson is scripted and color coded so itโs fool proof, just read the words in pink. It also is designed for kids that donโt know their alphabet or letter sounds yet, so you can start right away. Their claim is that after completing all 100 lessons your child will be able to read at a 2nd grade level! It worked for us, my 6th grader now enjoys chapter books on her own!
Math - Telling Time
Train Station Telling Time - Dramatic Play
Choo, Choo! Introduce the concept of time through dramatic play! Create your very own train station in your classroom or home.
Set-up your station and ticket booth, add traffic signals, platform clocks and train signs, make your own train schedule, assign roles for play, take ticket orders, design your train tickets and more! This play set focuses on whole hours only. It includes worksheets for telling time on digital and analog clocks as well as writing out the time.
PlayDoh Clock
PlayDoh makes anything more fun! Telling time is a challenging concept, so we try to reinforce it as part of play whenever possible.
We have a round play table, so we used it to make our own clock! We cut out the numbers using cutters and made our own hour and minute hands. We focused on whole hours and we quizzed each other asking โWhat time is it?โ
If you donโt have number cutters or a round table, try using this free clock mat and a sheet protector.
Supplies: PlayDoh and cutters
Units of Time Poster
I hope you enjoy these two great resources for helping to teach how to tell time. Include the poster in your morning work binder, circle time lesson or post it up in your classroom for easy reference.
Laminate the clock mat or use a sheet protector to use with PlayDoh or dry erase markers. Great for practicing telling time on both analog and digital clocks.
Art and Music
DIY LEGO Car Stamp Roller
My girls had a blast making their own stamp rollers! We just added small transportation stickers to a Duplo LEGO car and rolled them in ink. Then we rolled our cars on cardstock to make some fun patterns.
The stamp quality wasnโt as great as I wanted because the stickers werenโt absorbent. I recommend trying this with stickers made of foam instead of the puffy ones we used, I think they would absorb more ink. But the concept worked great!
Supplies: foam transportation stickers, Duplo LEGOs (or any toy with wide wheels), washable ink, cardstock
Land, Air, Sea Sticker Craft
Looking for an easy craft? This was super fun, easy and was a great way to classify different modes of transportation.
Just grab three sheets of colored paper. Light blue for air, dark blue for sea and green for land. We used this awesome road tape I found, but you could just draw a road with a sharpie.
Then have your students use transportation stickers to classify the different vehicles.
Supplies: colored paper, road tape, transportation stickers, glue stick, craft scissors
Prodigies Music
DoโฆReโฆMiโฆ
We love Prodigies! Prodigies Music is simply an incredible curriculum for teaching music. Ages 2-5 is the critical time to develop a life-long sense of pitch. Their curriculum is designed to develop a sense of pitch with easy to use desk bells that donโt require any tuning. They also teach piano, recorder and ukulele. Their subscription includes everything you can think of 450+ videos, worksheets, free bell mats, sheet music all color coded so itโs super easy to learn. If you donโt have an instrument they have a bunch of rhythm focused content that doesnโt require an instrument. They even have a free bell app that I use with my toddler when my oldest is practicing.
They have a free trial and discounts for annual memberships! Great deal! You can even check out some of their videos for free on YouTube.
Science - Force and Motion
Balloon Powered LEGO Car
By: Little Bins For Little Hands
I am a huge fan of anything LEGO, so when I saw this I knew we had to try it. We had so much fun building our cars and racing them, that Iโm sure this will become a frequent request.
We didnโt have the piece that was recommended by Little Bins For Little Hands to hold the ballon (1 x 2 flat with handle) so we used any piece that had a small hole that would keep the ballon attached, but would let air out. We used a small castle window, and low arches with fairly good success.
We also found that having supports on the sides of the balloon helped keep the ballon straight. Otherwise the car can easily spin in circles (which is also super fun!)
Force and Motion
By: Gideonโs World of Science
I love this compilation of mini science experiments completed by this sweet father and son duo.
Most of these experiments use household items you probably already have like a penny and balloon, orange and glass of water and ping pong ball and hair dryer.
Check out some of the great force and motion experiment ideas and then pick a few to try out on your own!
Social Studies
Biography Report on the Wright Brothers
Study the lives of the Wright Brothers on their journey to invent the first airplane as they pave the way for modern aviation.
Netherlands Yum Box
Loved this monthโs Yum Box from the Netherlands! Weโve been using Yum Box as a social studies lesson for the past few months and my girls love it. Itโs a great opportunity to teach them about other countries. We find each country on the globe and read fun facts about the country as we enjoy the snacks.
My girls are foodies at heart so they really love this. And it gets them to try flavors they would otherwise never even know of!
Sensory Play
Transportation Sensory Play
Beep, Beep, Beep!
This was a great low-prep sensory bin I pulled together in five minutes using wooden toys we already had.
First, create your road. Cut straws into approximately one inch pieces and line them up in evenly spaced roads. Then add the cars, signs and pom pom street lights.
To finish it off we added some fun road tape to our balance board to make a bridge. We challenged each other to push the cars just enough so they roll over the bridge without falling off the sides. We practiced the sounds each vehicle makes and buried the cars and then tried to find them.
filler: black beans
supplies: Melissa and Doug wooden vehicles and traffic signs, straws, pom poms (red, yellow and green), road tape, balance board and wooden scoops.
Physical Education
Sight Words Race
This was probably my girlโs favorite activity of the week. My oldest daughter loves it when we combine P.E. and other subjects. She is a wiggle worm and needs to move, so she absolutely thrived with this activity..
I set-up a basket for each of my girls on one side of the garage. Then I grabbed sight word flash cards for my five year-old and letter flash cards for my two year-old. They jumped on their Plasma Cars and raced back and forth while depositing the completed cards in the basket. We set a goal of 30 sight words and even kept going because they didnโt want to stop!
You can adapt this to any type of vehicle with wheels or just run back and forth. Sometimes if we are stuck inside we play a version of this where we make a mini obstacle course.
