Valentine’s Day Classroom Postcards
Love is in the air with these adorable pun filled Valentine's Postcards. Print on cardstock and glue/tape the front and back or print double-sided. For young writers, use the guided writing instructions to help students write a sweet Valentine's greeting on the back. Each postcard back includes a custom stamp that matches the design of the card. Print the black and white version and color it in yourself for a more personal touch.
Valentine’s Day Baby Shark Video
By: Pink Fong
Kick-off your Valentine’s Day celebration with this fun holiday version of the song no one will ever forget…Baby Shark! The video is super cute and my girls loved dancing to it as part of our circle time.
English Language Arts - Rhyming Words
Conversation Hearts Story Dialogue
My 5 year-old is very creative and loves making up stories, so this activity was right up her alley. I happened to find this awesome activity by This Reading Mama and we had to try it out.
We drew stick figures and stick bubbles and then used the conversation hearts to tell a story. We kept our drawing and switched out the hearts multiple times to tell different stories through dialogue. So fun!
Rhyming Scavenger Hunt
Scavenger hunts are the perfect way to get my kinesthetic learner excited about an activity. This was a great way to practice rhyming words and spelling. After she found a matching rhyme, she wrote it on the paper and then checked and colored in the box. I was pretty surprised by some of her words like “nook” and “dowel”.
Love Monster Craft and Writing
We absolutely adore the Love Monster book by Rachel Bright, so I really wanted to do a craft or activity based on the book. I was all set to design some type of felt craft when I stumbled on this adorable free printable. I love how cute the monster looks and that you get to write him a Valentine!
My 5 year-old did this all by herself and even drew the Monster’s stuffed animal to add to the craft. Adorable, fun and low-prep, this activity is a must do in my book!
Reading Lessons
There are only two resources I like to make sure I include on each week’s lesson plan, Prodigies Music (below) and Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This book has thousands of 5 star reviews on Amazon for a reason. It’s an effective, no-prep way to teach reading. We are 40 or so lessons in and I can already see a huge difference, my daughter actually sounds out the words instead of guessing.
The lessons are short (15-20min), easy to grasp and sequential. The entire lesson is scripted and color coded so it’s fool proof, just read the words in pink. It also is designed for kids that don’t know their alphabet or letter sounds yet, so you can start right away. Their claim is that after completing all 100 lessons your child will be able to read at a 2nd grade level!
Math - Telling Time
Heart and Clock Geoboards
Geoboards are a great interactive way to practice shapes and learn about geometry. Layer the hearts on top of each other with different designs and patterns to make the perfect mathematical Valentine.
Then, flip over the board to practice telling time! The back of these boards have a circle shape which is perfect for creating your own clock. I challenged my daughter to make 9:00 and she challenged me to make 8:30.
Don’t have a geoboard? You can make your own with some pushpins and other household items! We have these small plastic ones linked below, but I’ve had my eye on this larger wood geoboard since both my girls love these so much.
supplies: geoboard and rubber bands
12 Hearts Game
Conversation hearts + math = unending fun. My daughter begged me to play this game as soon as it ended, probably because for every correct equation I let her eat a candy heart.
This was a great free no-prep game. Just print the player board and recording sheet, grab some candy hearts and a pair of dice and you are ready to play. We played the roll and cover version where we rolled the dice and either added or subtracted the numbers on the dice. Then we covered the heart that matched the answer on the equation and recorded the equation on the recording sheet. Math + Candy = Happy Girls.
Units of Time Poster
I hope you enjoy these two great resources for helping to teach how to tell time. Include the poster in your morning work binder, circle time lesson or post it up in your classroom for easy reference.
Laminate the clock mat or use a sheet protector to use with PlayDoh or dry erase markers. Great for practicing telling time on both analog and digital clocks.
Art and Music
Shadow Heart Wings
Help your little ones soar, with these shadow heart wings!
We had so much fun making our own angel wings. Just cut a cardboard box into a wing shape. To prep for this craft draw hearts and other shapes and cut them out with an exacto knife. Then have your little ones tape or glue tissue paper over the shapes.
Supplies: cardboard, tissue paper, glue/tape, X-acto knife.
Love Notes Mailbox
This was a cute no-prep craft that also has a great purpose. We are using it to store all of our homemade Valentines until the big day. Every day we work on a few more Valentines and add them to our mailbox.
I found this assortment of fun felt Valentine’s stickers, but you could paint, decoupage, or just draw on it with markers. Great opportunity for a multi media art project.
Supplies: craft mailbox kit
Prodigies Music
Do…Re…Mi…
We love Prodigies! Prodigies Music is simply an incredible curriculum for teaching music. Ages 2-5 is the critical time to develop a life-long sense of pitch. Their curriculum is designed to develop a sense of pitch with easy to use desk bells that don’t require any tuning. They also teach piano, recorder and ukulele. Their subscription includes everything you can think of 450+ videos, worksheets, free bell mats, sheet music all color coded so it’s super easy to learn. If you don’t have an instrument they have a bunch of rhythm focused content that doesn’t require an instrument. They even have a free bell app that I use with my toddler when my oldest is practicing.
They have a free trial and discounts for annual memberships! Great deal! You can even check out some of their videos for free on YouTube.
Science - Force and Motion
Cupid Balloon Rocket
By: Little Bins For Little Hands
See how fast Cupid can fly through the air with this balloon powered rocket. Set-up a string from one end of the room to the other. Blow up a balloon and secure it with a clothes pin. Tape cupid and the straw to it and string the straw through the string. Then remove the clothes pin and watch Cupid fly!
Talk about how letting out the air in the balloon creates a forward pushing motion called thrust. The air rushing out of the balloon pushes the air outside of the balloon, pushing it forward. This is Newton’s Third Law of Motion, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Supplies: string, balloon, printable cupid, straw, tape and clothes pin.
Social Studies
Atlas Crate
By: Kiwi and Co.
I was really excited to receive our first Atlas Crate by Kiwi and Co. We had a Koala Box subscription for a year and we absolutely loved it, so I was excited to try their geography themed box for ages 6-11.
The first box included four activities: Explore the 7 Continents, Spinning Globe Craft, Adventure Book and the Great Big World Map Challenge. We broke up the activities over several days for this week’s Social Studies lesson.
Social Studies was one subject that I was struggling to find ways to make fun for my Kindergartener. So I decided that a subscription box was the way to go, but which one?! We tried out the Universal Yum snack box and although we loved it, we wanted something that included more activities.
Sensory Play
Love Potion Sensory Play
I couldn’t decide what Valentine’s Day themed sensory play to try, so I thought…why not combine three?
We made Candy Heart Oobleck, Valentines Day Foam and Fizzy Hearts and had a blast combining them to make our very own love potions.
I made each component separately and then set-up a table as an invitation to play. They had so much fun making the fizzy shapes bubble and creating their own love potions.
Oobleck Supplies: 1 cup cornstarch, 1 1/2 cups water, candy hearts, food coloring, wide container (mix by hand)
Foam Supplies: 2 TBSP Dawn Dish Soap, 1/4 cup water, food coloring, blender or mixer. (mix on high till peaks form)
Fizzy Hearts: 1/2 cup baking soda, TBSP water, food coloring, heart mould or cutter, vinegar, pipettes, small toys to hide inside. (mix then freeze for 30 minutes.)
Other Supplies: rainbow sprinkles, heart erasers, small corked bottles, OXO nesting beakers
Physical Education
Happy Heart Exercise Dice
Keep your heart happy by doing these happy heart exercises all day long. Roll the dice to see what exercise to do and how many times. In a group, each player takes turns rolling the dice, but everyone does the exercises together.
